In its tenth birthday, Greatmore Studios is proud to extend an invitation to share in a time of reflection over the achievements of the past decade. This is an opportunity to celebrate our history and the new possibilities that local and international artists bring to the space every year.

To mark this event the committee at Greatmore Studios has selected work on paper from the collection of images donated by local and international artists which will serve as prizes in our raffle draw. The draw will take place at the Greatmore Studios in Woodstock during an evening of celebration on the 14th of November. All the studios will be open and the selected work will be on exhibition. 179 artworks have been generously donated to the Greatmore Studios collection; 112 works have been selected for inclusion in this exclusive raffle collection. Sasol Wax Art Awards

The Sasol Wax Art Award exhibition opens in October at the University of Johannesburg Art Centre.

The Sasol Wax Art Award is South Africa’s most prestigious accolade for established artists. It is the only industry benchmark that recognises artists who have achieved professional maturity and are on a par with the best internationally.

Five of South Africa’s most dynamic contemporary artists, Avhashone Mainganye, Tracey Rose, Stephen Hobbs, Hentie van der Merwe and Brett Murray were selected from over 120 nominations to participate in the third Sasol Wax Art Award exhibition, open to the public from the 14th October – 7 November 2008.

In its third year, the Award is targeted at mid-career and professionally mature artists with substantial exhibition profiles. This category is not represented by most South African art opportunities, which focus on younger emerging artists. While mid-career artists have proven their excellence in their fields, there are few opportunities to recognise this.

Wax must be featured in either the process, the concept or as a medium in the finalists’ artworks.

“ It was amazing to see how the different bodies of work come together”, says Curator and Artistic Director Les Cohn. “Working independently of each other, there is still a common theme running through the works which represents the Zeigtgeist of the country at the moment- challenges, questions and ironies about power in it many forms.”

The works on exhibition will include video installations that challenge the notions of corporate power and sponsorship, explorations of the changing landscape of a city, as well as tributes to the significant history of the Venda region, and the power of the spiritual ties that bind people. The artists have made full use of the exhibition venue, with finalist Brett Murray using the outside walls of the gallery as his canvas in a powerful installation message.

Says Carola Ross, Executive Director of the Award, “ The Award, now in its third year, has reached a level of maturity of its own. The industry has been wonderfully supportive of the project, and has in turn benefited from the Award. We feel that the Award has raised the bar for South African artists and created awareness that there is in fact segmentation in the industry, where artists can now be considered established at a certain level.”

Also on exhibition will be the work from the Sasol wax art award Jewellery Outreach Initiative, SWAA JOI, a programme affiliated to the Award in partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture, under the endorsement of the Deputy Minister Ntombazana Botha”

The programme has seen Durban University of Technology partner with community group, Velobala, and the University of the Johannesburg partnering with Imfundiso Skill Development Project.

Opportunities have thus been developed to act as catalysts for aspirant jewellery designers to explore creative concepts, and develop technical proficiency. Bringing together students the various institutions, programme provides skills training, and encourages creative exchange between the two parties.

Some information related to the auction:-

The relationship between the arts and commercial industry is one in which issues of creative ownership and copyright infringement is frequently contested. It is generally financially impossible for the individual artist to address these issues legally when faced with a corporate giant.

The david&GOLIATH initiative is aimed at creating a platform through which
the arts can support the arts in protecting creative ownership.

Prominent South African artists have generously sponsored artworks to be auctioned off at this fundraising event, which is proudly hosted by The Bag Factory.

Funds raised at this event will be used to support the case of:

due to occur in the High Court on the 9th of October 2008

Any further profits from this auction will enable the establishment of the david&GOLIATH trust, which will aim to financially support artists against copyright infringement and commercial exploitation.

Exploring notions of identity, aesthetics, human and geographic relationships; ‘modern fabrics’ interrogates the relationship between 'high' and 'low' culture in the cosmopolitan urban landscape of South Africa.

The exhibition is arranged in a symmetrical construction probing dialogues between works of different artists as a way of finding synergies, commonality and contradictions. This construction is set to demonstrate the diverse and hybrid nature of the city. Whilst the word ‘fabrics’ creates an impression of a show of artists' only working with a didactic inclusion of fabrics, the title of the show is a metaphor for ‘young artists’ on the exhibition. ‘Modern fabrics’ also refers to the constructed weave of the modern urban environment.

Coincidentally, selected artists in the show have works that use fabric, their works have been included because of their conceptual comment relating to the city. Similar to the inclusion of other types of found objects, these low cultured commodities in artists' work, purposefully transform the 'found object' function into new readings. Mkhize, Bengu, Xaba, and Sitas explore this dimension in their work.

Dunywa, Mama, Bopape, Dunn & Zondi interrogate the contemporary language of high tech through the use of new media whilst exploring different and separate concepts in their works. Traditional mediums are also included, particularly the work of Vaughan-Evans and Sibande, who use painting to excavate notions of both human and geographic relationships.

Curated by Nontobeko (Nonto) Ntombela. She is currently employed as the Gallery Curator of the Art Gallery, Durban University of Technology. Trained as an artist in recent years she has worked mainly as a curator and art project manager in Durban.

A living legacy is the biggest and significant curated heritage exhibition in KZN. The exhibition is part of a larger heritage festival under the hospices of Kizo Art Gallery with a title “Umgido, KZN Heritage festival”.

The exhibition intends to investigate the legacy and the contribution of experienced artists (deceased or alive) as to how this legacy moulds the practice today. Art as in many other industries here in South Africa is not immune to the history of this country and the project will look at the link between the practices then and how it influences the industry today.

Are artist today able to create art without the need to reference history of South Africa, i.e. apartheid and its legacy?

KZN as a province has contributed greatly to the creative industry of South Africa and an exhibition like this is appropriate for Durban as it will also investigate how many of the more established artists are still practicing in Durban and what legacy they are leaving behind.

Requirements for submissions are:
Text submissions:
• No longer than 2500 words. (We know the web is unlimited, but most web-readers attention spans are not!)
• Please submit in an unformatted Word document.
• Any form of poetry, prose, fiction or non-fictional, creative or journalistic, public or private writing is welcome.
• An accompanying illustration may be submitted. Must be in JPG format, and no larger than 1MB.
• Audio files are welcome (recordings of your poetry, prose, song lyrics or opinions).
• Book reviews welcome. Please keep them to about 500 words and include full details of the book you are reviewing (author, publication date, publisher, etc.)
Visual submissions:
• Anything from 1 – 8 images. If you are submitting more than one image, please ensure that they are part of some kind of series (i.e. no arbitrary collection of portfolio shots).
• Must be in JPG format, and no larger than 1MB per image.
• Must be accompanied by a title (even if untitled), year of production, and a very short abstract/explanation.
• Multimedia files welcome (animations, short films, etc)

THUPELO INVITES YOU TO APPLY FOR A FOUND OBJECT WORKSHOP WHICH WILL BE HELD in Cape Town

from Friday the 26 of September with an open day exhibition of work in progress on Saturday the 11th of October. Thupelo workshops are artists led and are initiated in response to a need for interaction between artists. This workshop will include 20 artists; all with experience in their various practices and able to experiment, exchange ideas and skills and expand their practices.

"The concentration of so much energy and commitment into a short period of time encourages risk taking and experimentation that might not happen in the artist's own studio. At the same time the process of exchange that lies at the heart of the [Thupelo] Workshops based on the Triangle model often has a long-term influence on the practice and sometimes the lives of the participants. The strong emphasis on process rather than product engendered by the workshops means that the work made and exhibited at the workshop open days is often not finished work"

Thupelo invites established visual artists to apply to work in this dynamic, stimulating two week workshop at Greatmore Studios. Applications in all medium will be accepted. Artists should bring to the workshop their own found objects, tools, paints, scrap paper, cameras etc. Applicants need to commit to working all day, everyday. There is no budget for accommodation or transport. The two week workshop will close with an open day exhibition on Saturday 11th October.

Dinkies Sithole: Shrine Rituals

Bag Factory Artist at the Nando's Project Room # 2

Dinkies Sithole is the second artist in he current incarnation of the project room now appropriately called the Nando's Project Room. Sithole is a Soweto-born artist whose work traverses painting, sculpture, performance, video and other media.

The current installation is called Shrine Rituals and comprises a series of shrines made out of discarded materials. The objects in these shrines are re-invested with energy and potency. Here the scientific conception of energy meets the more universal idea of energy as something more metaphysical. For instance, many people in South Africa don't discarding their personal affects for fear that these objects might be used to bewitch the owner. Similarly different belief systems such as Yoruba cosmology where every object has a 'life force' or "ase".

In these shrines the batteries, which are products of science, are not out of place with the miniature Buddha's, rosaries, bottles of 'umuthi' and the coloured string, often used by ZCC adherents for protection.

The Bag Factory’s About Art program presents ‘Rites of Fealty/ Rites of Passage’, a one-night exhibition of new performance artworks by a group of emerging South African artists. The exhibition follows an intensive 10-day workshop in performance art presented by Johan Thom. The workshop was structured as a non-hierarchal laboratory, with each of the artists selected for participation already having established a visible presence in the South African cultural sphere. Artists like Ismail Farouk, Anthea Moys, Kemang wa Luhere and Murray Turpin all share in a multi-disciplinary approach to artistic expression, freely mixing elements of fields as far as urban geography, digital sound sampling, video, public performance, dance and theatre into their oeuvres.

New works have been commissioned by each of the participating artists.

The theme ‘Rites of fealty/ Rites of passage’ stresses the transformative capacity of art where the artwork is envisioned as a rite of passage through which both artist and viewer may plot alternatives to existing modes of relating to our familiar surroundings, ordinary social interactions, physical gestures and use of language. In this way art may act as a gateway that embodies the possibility for personal and societal change through direct action and physical participation.

Invitation to Deposit Work at Joburg Art Bin

Empty Office invites collectors of local art to deposit pieces from their private collections into the Joburg Art Bin at the Bag Factory for “creative recycling” between the 18^th of July and the 1^st of August 2008.

A team of artists, in consultation with the collector depositing the work, will dismantle the work and use the physical detritus to develop proposals for public artworks to be installed in Johannesburg. The collector who deposits work will play a critical role in deciding what site the art work will be reconfigured for.

The central idea behind the project is to invite collectors to democratize their art collections by donating pieces of it to the public realm. Empty Office argues that because of the increasing commercialization of the visual arts, cultural production is essentially becoming privatized and controlled by capital. The project is radical in the sense that it asks collectors to depart with work they may treasure in order to invest in the idea of art rather than material instances of it. There are many reasons why an art collector may feel motivated to donate work to the Joburg Art Bin: they may feel that a piece is obsolescent, reached its sell-by date, that it is ideologically problematic, that it has potential to be shared with a broader community, or a collector may just be curious about what happens to piece of art that they own is dismantled by another visual artist.

We are interested in how art objects are remotivated in new contexts, specifically in how the lives of objects change as they move from the private into the public domain. In this sense, the project is neither nihilistic nor anti-aesthetic but rather celebrates the contribution that artists make to culture, by asking artists to materially intervene directly on the artworks that collectors have donated to the Joburg Art Bin.

How do Southern African writers, artists, choreographers, musicians and theatre-makers see their art in the context of the society they live in? What are the fundamental issues of their countries, and what ideas do they have for solving them?

In 2008, the foundation kunst:raum sylt quelle, in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg is launching the “sylt quelle cultural award for Southern Africa”. This competition is open to artists of all disciplines from Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Swaziland.

Artists may apply with a project that will link culture and society, creating a context in which culture will have an impact on social structures and attitudes. The winner/winners will receive an award of 10,000 Euros, which must be used to finance the proposed project.

Selections will be made by an independent jury in a two-stage process.

The realized project/projects will be presented at the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg , the kunst:raum sylt quelle in Germany and other venues. The authors rights of the selected projects are not touched through this call of proposals.

ULI: Journal of Visual Arts and Culture is a referred academic bi-annual publication of the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (visit nsukkaartschool.info). It is to be published in June and December each year electronically and, occasionally, in hard copies.

The publication aims to critique and document contemporary developments in the visual arts and culture of Nigeria, Africa and the world. It shall open up and sustain debate on issues in Nigerian and international art as a way of contributing to art scholarship and professionalism in the so-called Third World.

Well-researched papers are invited for the first issue to be published in December 2008.

Historical, critical, art educational, and other scholarly articles on modern and postmodern tendencies in the art and visual culture of Africa are welcome, as well as reviews, interviews and portfolios.

Articles should be typed and double-spaced on A4 paper and should not exceed 20 pages. Reference should conform to the Harvard style. Photographs and illustrations should be clear enough for print reproduction; poor quality photographs will not be accepted.

Submissions can be sent in hard copy by post or in soft copy via e-mail. Although materials are accepted all year round, the deadline for submission for the maiden issue is 31st November, 2008.

Marvellous World: Bronze Casting Workshop and Panel Discussion

In conjunction with the Marvellous World exhibition, currently on show, The Bag Factory invites the public to participate in a bronze casting workshop and discussion panel.

Bronze Casting Workshop over two weekends: 5 - 6 July 2008 and 12 - 13 July 2008, starting at 10 am every morning.
Interactive Panel Discussion: Friday 11 July 2008 5:30 for 6pm

The Bronze Casting workshop will take place on the weekends of the 5th and 6th as well as the 12th and 13th of July.

It will serve as a basic introduction to the bronze casting process. It will cover the beginning and the end of the process. The wax positive generation (art) and the demoulding, fettling, finishing and paternation (craft) of the final artwork. The rest of the process will be demonstrated and discussed but will be carried out by my assistant in Guy du Toit's studio and could form the basis of a more advanced workshop.

Participants need no previous casting experience and age is not a criteria. The number of participants is limited to 10 for logistical and transport reasons, we run on a first come first serve basis. Please book with Bronwyn on 011 834 9181 or bronwyn.lace@gmail.com.

Cost R 800 per participant - this would include wax, modelling tools, all the process that is not part of the workshop, namely, the gating and investing of the wax positives, the burnout of the wax - melting and alloying of the bronze, pouring and finishing. It also includes some snacks and transport to the foundry.

The weight of our object will have to be about 3 kg or the size of a mans fist.

Wax positives will be made at The Bag Factory on the weekend of the 5th and 6th, if you complete your positive on the 5th there is no need for you to come on the 6th.

One week is necessary for the gating and investment, to be done in Zwavelpoort studio.

Burnout, casting and finishing at Zwavelpoort studio on the weekend of the 12th and 13th, we'll all travel to the studio together where we'll have a bring and braai to end it off.

The workshop is facilitated by the artists of the Marvelous World team, this includes Guy du Toit, Sarel Petrus, Paul Cooper and Richard Forbes.

Gasworks is looking for a committed intern to assist the Exhibitions Curator at Gasworks on the exhibitions programme, events and the new reading area.

Tasks involve assisting on all aspects of Gasworks’ Exhibitions Programmes. In this role an intern will gain valuable experience of working alongside the curator on solo and group exhibitions, research projects, and events, with an insight into the organisational and administrative skills necessary to run a leading artistic programme.

Internship duration: ideal commitment of six months on a two-day a week basis. The days can be flexible.

The intern will be responsible to the Exhibitions Curator and will have excellent communication skills, be enthusiastic, organised, autonomous and hands on, with an ability to problem-solve. An interest in research-oriented and discursive practices, film and performance is particularly relevant to this position. Good writing skills are preferable.

Tasks and experience gained may include:
- Assisting artists and liaising with them on a variety of projects

- Supervising installations and in some instances contribute to them
- Liaising with the Audience Development Co-ordinator and designers

Call for Applications for the 2009 KHW Residency

The Künstlerhäuser Worpswede are one of the largest residencies in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Among former grant holders are many well-known international artists such as Emmett Williams, Koeken Ergun, Yuri Leiderman, Dan Perjovschi, Katharina Sieverding or Egill Saebjoernsson.

The Künstlerhäuser Worpswede are supported by the Barkenhoff Stiftung, Worpswede, and the private initiative Atelierhaus e. V., which collectively make the studios available. Besides the regular presentation of works produced in the studios both within and outside Worpswede, there are also, on a discursive level, artists' discussions, workshops and symposia on artists' support, which take place at the Barkenhoff.
The grant body is also supported by the state of Lower Saxony through the award of a monthly grant of 1.400 Euro.
A restriction concerning age or nationality does not exist.
Selection is made by a specialised jury in the fine arts and sound art respectively.

Raster Gallery
Lukasz Gorczyca and Michal Kaczynski run Raster independent art space in Warsaw. They work both internationally and locally to combine progressive art with a spirit of everyday social existence. They are also known for "Raster" art magazine launched in Warsaw in 1995. In Autumn 2000 it was transformed into an online weekly journal www.raster.art.pl. Raster has been instrumental in promoting the work of Wilhelm Sasnal, Marcin Maciejowski, Rafal Bujnowski, Aneta Grzeszykowska and Michal Budny.

Art & Language
EAST 09 will be selected by Michael Baldwin and Mel Ramsden of Art & Language. The name Art & Language was adopted in 1968, to refer to a collaborative practice that had developed over the previous two years. The journal Art-Language was first published in May 1969. By the mid 1970s some 20 people were associated with the name, divided between England and New York. From 1976, however, the genealogical thread of Art & Language’s artistic work was taken solely into the hands of Baldwin and Ramsden, with the theoretical and critical collaboration of these two with Charles Harrison. Art & Language have also collaborated with BANK, the rock band The Red Krayola and on theory installations with The Jackson Pollock Bar. They have been included in many international exhibitions including Documenta in 1972, 1982 and 1997 and Galerie Foksal in 1975. They have also had several major exhibitions in recent years at the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris (1993), F.A.T Barcelona (1999), P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York (1999) and the Musée d'Art Moderne, Lille (2002). They are represented by the Lisson Gallery and are preparing a show at EMMA, Finland in 2009. They live in South Northamptonshire.

Following other seminal performances such as Theory of Gravity (2006) and Come in Peace/Go to Pieces (2008), Johan Thom once again appropriates from a variety of sources: the title of his new work Twilight (of the Idols) is a clear reference to Twilight of the Idols by Friedrich Nietzsche (1888). The physical action comprises that of the clenched fist, associated with so-called leftwing political groups but also, more generally, with anger, violence and frustration, and found materials such as ordinary washing detergent and black sump oil. These materials will be combined in order to create a ritualistic performance lasting approximately two hours in which a group of performers will repeat a series of actions with military precision.

The Bind/Ontbind (series 1) video installation, first presented at the 2003 Venice Biennale - as part of the exhibition 'Recycling the Future: Viverevenezia2' - is an extension of a sculptural process where Thom binds or wraps objects with rope, tape, plastic, etc. The artist writes that, 'For me, the work is a metaphor for the constant processes of decay and of regeneration, of affirmation and negation - for example, the way various identities and ideologies bind themselves to us. They may disfigure us, but whenever we attempt to replace them with new systems of thought we are in fact simply disfiguring ourselves anew: this is the void - our inability to exist without disfiguring ourselves and others through our limiting gaze.'

Thom (b 1976) lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa. He holds a BA Fine Arts degree (1999) from the University of Pretoria and a Master's Degree from the Tshwane University of Technology (2003, Cum Laude).

Established in 1995, Braziers International Artists Workshop (BIAW) is recognised as a unique and highly valued opportunity for artists wishing to examine their practice in critically engaged and global contexts.

Braziers 2008 seeks to redress these imbalances by inviting artists to work collaboratively,

Triangle Workshop, Dumbo Brooklyn

Triangle Workshop is an international two-week workshop held in Dumbo, Brooklyn. 30 inventive artists from all over the world are selected to make art in an open studio setting, a setting that stimulates vigorous exchange and dialogue among the participants. Artists are housed and fed and excellent studio space is provided. Throughout the two weeks, two panel discussions and critical dialogues are held and prominent critics and artists visit the studios and make themselves available to the participants for conversation or critiques.

The two week Triangle Workshop is an intense, high-energy experience with artists renewing critical perspectives and stimulating their practice in the company of their peers from the world over. The Workshop concludes with a festive open-studio celebration which draws hundreds of visitors each year.

A limited number of travel grants can be arranged for foreign participants. 2008 workshop dates have not been solidified but IT will take place in the month of September. This event is a brief expose on the artists who participated on the Bag Factory's Inter-provincial project. The inter-provincial project invited 12 developing and mid-career artists from other parts of South Africa to Johannesburg. The project was based at the Bag Factory in Newtown, and gave participants the opportunity to experience the Johannesburg art scene and offered them the facilities to be creative together and enhance their art and their careers. The project consisted of informal talks/discussions by art personalities, drawing workshops, presentations by participants and Johannesburg artists, and an open creative workshop.

This new Award initiated by English Partnerships celebrates the first ten years of regeneration on Greenwich peninsula.

The peninsula was once a derelict brownfield site, and is now one of London's largest regeneration projects; a place in the making. The peninsula has been transformed over the past decade and the next ten years will see even more dramatic changes. This is a unique and exciting opportunity for an artist to create work which responds to this transformation.

The brief is to create an art work in response to the art in the public realm curatorial strategy and the concept of transformation. The art work may be temporary or permanent however there must be an outcome to present to an identified audience on the peninsula which marks a moment in the context of the ten year milestone.

Artists must submit...
-A brief proposal outlining the initial ideas and approach (no more than 2 sides A4);
-An initial outline budget including artist fees, materials, production and presentation/installation;
-Timeline;
- An up-to-date CV;
-Up to 6 images of previous work;

Three to four proposals will be short-listed and those artists invited for interview on the 13th December 2007. The interview panel will include representatives from the client group, visual arts sector and local community. There will be a fee of £175.00 payable to each of the short -listed artists.
The final art work should be completed by June 30th 2008. A presentation of work in progress is required to coincide with a community festival in May 2007. The overall budget for the project, to cover all costs including artist fees, client liaison, community engagement, materials, fabrication/production, and presentation/installation, will not exceed £24,000. VAT inclusive if applicable.

Call for Applications for the 2008 Residencies in Fine Arts and Sound Art

Annually, the Kuenstlerhaeuser Worpswede offers residential grants to artists practicing in Fine arts and Sound art. Successful applicants will gain access to one of ten studio apartments (between 40 to 117 squared metres) and a monthly maintenance grant of 1400 EUR. Besides the regular presentation of works produced in the studios both within and outside Worpswede, there are also, on a discursive level, artists’ discussions, workshops and symposia on artists’ support, which take place at the Barkenhoff.

Any professional artist may apply for a grant from Künstlerhäuser Worpswede. There are no restrictions regarding nationality or age. An adequate command of the German or English language is mandatory however a German language course is available. The successful applicants are expected to live and work in Worpswede during the grant period.

making waves: a selection from the SABC art collection in Cape Town

A version of this exhibition, previously shown at the Johannesburg Art Gallery in 2004- 5 and at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in 2006, is to be shown at the Iziko Good Hope Gallery at the Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town from September 6 th to October 28th 2007.

The exhibition which will feature approximately 100 works attempts what no South African collection, either public or corporate, has previously done, to provide both an interpretation of the development of South African art through the 20 th century and a selection of the best contemporary South African work.

The historical coverage traces the emergence of a local tradition distinguishable from the earlier indigenous and Europe-derived traditions. The latter is illustrated in the work of Kay, Laubser, Preller and Stern among others.

The local tradition is seen as originating in the township painters from Sekoto among others in the 30s to Motjuoadi, Ngatane and Sihlali in the 60s and 70s and also in the very different hybrid products of the Rorke's Drift and Polly Street art schools in the third quarter of the century. Of pivotal importance in this process is the unique work produced in the context of political struggle after Sharpville 1960 and Soweto 1976, seminally in the drawings of Dumile and Motau in the 60s, followed in the 70s and the 80s by the work of Kumalo, Legae, Alexander, Ractliffe and others in a range of media.

In addition distributed through the exhibition spaces are some of the finest examples of contemporary South African work in a range of media, including the sculptures of Hlungwane, Mabasa and Schütz, the drawings of Kentridge and Victor, the photographs of Mofokeng and Tillim, the prints of Rakgoathe and Shilakoe, the mixed media of Nhlengethwa and Rose and the paintings of Hodgins and Siopis. The work of several younger artists including Gush, Hlobo, Hugo and Madikida is also featured.

The works are hung in a series of numbered and labelled spaces forming a suite of themes from Struggle and Identity through Street to that which informs much of the exhibition - Predicament. The exhibition includes a number of exceptionally fine recently acquired works, both historical and contemporary. An illustrated catalogue with text and alphabetical list of artists will be available to viewers.

The exhibition, which received a BASA award in 2006, has been widely acclaimed in art journals and in the press.

Among these, Art South Africa commented: "When it comes to corporate and public art collections, the SABC collection is one of the most potent assemblies of work this country has to offer." And the Sunday Times wrote: "Making Waves shows a consistent sensitivity to artistic quality and social relevance…In quantity and quality [it] has the critical mass needed to give an illuminating overview of our troubled history,"

The exhibition which has been curated by Koulla Xinisteris, Collection curator, and Graham Neame, Collection art advisor, will be opened on 6 th September 2007 at 6.00pm by the Chief Financial Officer of the SABC, Robin Nicholson.

The Iziko Good Hope Gallery at the Castle is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 9.30am to 4.00pm. Safe parking is available in the grounds of the gallery.

The REAL Photography Award is a new and exclusive photography award created by ING Real Estate to promote international contemporary photography. Presented every two years, the final call for entries is open through September 1 for this year's themes: Nature, Development and Architecture.

The prize money of EUR 50,000, will be awarded by a jury that will consider only works that have been submitted for review. Nationality, gender or earlier productions made by the applying artists will not be considered. The 30 best photographers will be nominated and offered an exclusive exhibition. All works displayed will be published in a catalog.

Artists are invited to submit one participating photograph and two supporting photographs. The photographs are required to have been taken within the last two years, in order to reflect current contemporary photography.

In conjunction with his solo exhibition at the Bag Factory, Johan Thom ran a two weekend workshop on performance art with 11 arts practitioners. The workshop consisted of a brief introduction to some seminal performance art works in the history of the medium and a series of practical exercises which culminated in an impromptu day of performance at Johannesburg Art Gallery where the participants each presented a spontaneous performative interaction inspired by works on the Africa Remix show.

As a final presentation and to close Thom’s exhibition, The Theory of Flight the workshop participants proffered an evening of new and original performance pieces entitled RE/Action on the 8th August 2007. The workshop participants were Shane De Lange, Candice Hirson, Bronwyn Lace, Malvin Mokhonya, Anthea Moys, Rob Peers, Anthea Pokroy, Mishkaar Roberts, Debbie Rogers, Lerato Shadi and Rat Western.

Beeldenstad.net, the brainchild of Babak Fakhamzadeh (Bag Factory Artist in Residence), was started as an informal way to track art in public spaces in several cities in Europe. Last year, Google Maps functionality was added to display public artworks on a map of some of those cities.

Beeldenstad.net is fully user driven, meaning that anyone can submit artworks and photos, the latter either directly through Beeldenstad.net, or alternatively through the popular photo sharing service Flickr.com.

During Babak's third month as a resident artist at The Bag Factory, he worked together with Eric Itzkin of the department of Arts, Culture and Heritage of the city of Johanesburg, to identify and map some 50 public artworks and bring them to Beeldenstad.net, most of them with extensive information on the individual artworks.

Now, Beeldenstad.net also offers KML and GeoRSS feeds for displaying geospatial information inside Google Earth or Google Maps.

Interactive Video combines the use of video cameras and computers in order to track bodies, motion, proximity, light and color for use in interactive installation, multimedia performance, and VJing. All students will leave with copies of the software worked on in this workshop.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS - THREE-MONTH RESIDENCIES IN LONDON

Africa Beyond aims to keep African culture in a central position within the modern UK landscape, through its website and other media, lively public events, and now through a series of residencies in London beginning in April 2008.

Gasworks International Residency Programme will play host to three visiting artists from Africa who will be supported in developing a project with InIVA, Photographers' Gallery, or the Southbank Centre.

Established contemporary visual artists from Africa, who have not spent extensive time working in Europe, are invited to apply for this programme. Each of the three residencies will have a specific aim and focus:

At the Southbank Centre, the residency will focus on the display of new and existing work, showcase his/her practice on a major public platform. The residency with the Photographers' Gallery will focus on an artist's contribution to the community and the role of education in artistic practice. At InIVA, the artist will have the opportunity to develop and contribute within a leading space for research and discussion of contemporary art. All artists will be provided with a studio and support at Gasworks.

Applications must state which residency/institution the artist would like to become involved in.

The Research Centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation (TrAIN) at the University of the Arts London is teaming up with Gasworks International Residency Programme to offer a fully funded three month residency and research placement for a non UK-based artist.

The residency comprises:
- accommodation and living expenses in London
- a private studio at Gasworks
- access to University of the Arts London library and research facilities
- contribution to research culture and seminars at TrAIN
- an Open Studio and artist's talk at Gasworks
- administrative, academic and curatorial support from both institutions.

Offering both practical and academic research facilities, this residency focuses on professional development, artistic exchange and the development of artistic research and process. The support, networks and creative environments that Gasworks and TrAIN can offer will provide the artist with the means to research and experiment with new work, taking an important step in an international context.

This residency is open to mid-career artists not based in the UK, who are three years out of a BA or equivalent. The selected artist will be in a strong position to make an enthusiastic, discursive and speculative contribution to both the academic and studio environments.

The residency is scheduled to take place from October 2007.

Africa Remix Artists Visit The Bag

On the 24^th of June Africa Remix, the exhibition curated by Simon Njami, opened at Johannesburg Art Gallery. The show features 137 art works by 85 artists from over 25 countries on the African continent and it’s diaspora. The show was first exhibited in 2004 at the Museum Kunst Palast, in Dusseldorf in Germany, and was considered to be the largest exhibition of contemporary African art ever seen in Europe. The exhibition then toured to the Hayward Gallery in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.

The Johannesburg opening is the first time this exhibition has been shown on African soil.

As part of the opening week’s celebrations a number of the exhibiting artists who were in town and staff from the Johannesburg Art Gallery joined the Bag Factory artists for drinks, dinner and a small exhibition of recent works by the Bag Factory artists.

From the 18th to the 22nd of June, Jill Waterman (arts management lecturer at Wits University) ran a business orientated workshop for a pre-selected group of emerging artists at The Bag Factory as a part of the About Art programme.

The artists, from Soweto, Orange Farm and Hillbrow, were taught basic internet and email skills, how to write a biography, create a business card, write a funding proposal and draw up a budget.

After an intense week of workshopping, the group attended a Mapp Seta dance production at Museum Africa (featuring the aboriginal group Descendents) as a case study of a production produced during a learnership programme to which some of the students may wish to apply.

The Edward Ruiz Mentorship awards an emerging photographer the opportunity to mentored by a leading photography professional, and produce a body of work for exhibition.

The Mentorship:
The mentorship is designed to create ‘momentum’ to launch a promising photographer’s career in photography.

Mentor appointed in consultation with Market Photo Workshop.
Work must be done within the borders of South Africa.
Exhibition must be premiered at the Market Photo Workshop gallery.
Photographer must be available to complete the project by the end of 2007.

A comprehensive CV, with full contact details
An existing portfolio, 12-20 photographs
100-200 words on existing work to explain photography vision
Project Proposal (one page, 300 words)

Project proposal should address the following areas:

The focus, meaning and intention of the project
Why do you think your project is important?
How do you envisage managing your project from start to finish (planning, permissions, photographing, printing, exhibition, etc)?

Selection of a candidate:

By a panel of judges appointed by the Advisory Board of the Market Photo Workshop.
Candidates may be requested to come for an interview and/or to clarify and present their proposal.
The judges need to be satisfied that the proposal from the candidate/s has merit; that the candidate will be able to manage the project and that he/she is likely to derive lasting benefits from the mentorship.

Scope of the grant:

The grant of R30,000 will enable the successful photographer to produce and exhibit a body of work and will assist with:

the purchase of necessary supplies and materials for production and exhibition
some travel
research

Timeframe:

Deadline for applications is 18 July 2007
Only successful applicants will be informed by email no later than 30 Jul 2006.
The candidate must begin work soon thereafter.

Andrew Tshabangu - City in Transition

Bag Factory artists Sam Nhlengethwa and Andrew Tshabangu both open exhibitions this month.

Nhlengethwa will exhibit solo work as well as collaborations in conjunction with Robert Hodgins at art on paper. The exhibition entitled Double Jeopardy will open this Saturday, 9 June 2007 at 13h00. The exhibition closes on 30 June 2007.

Tshabangu's exhibition, City in Transition, opens Thursday 14 June @18h30 at Gallery MOMO.

Athi-Patra Ruga @ Michael Stevenson

Bag Factory artist Athi-Patra Ruga opens his first gallery exhibition in the side gallery at Michael Stevenson in Cape Town this evening. The show entitled She's Dancing for the Rain with her Hand in the Toaster features an installation of suspended garments designed by Ruga, and will be complemented by Scenes from Miss Congo, a multi-channel video work shot on location in Kinshasa, DRC, during a recent residency (part of the final instalment of Die Naai Masjien Trilogy).

Ruga and his team, consisting of performance partner Christopher Martin, actress Simanga Humphrey and personal assistant/production designer Bianca Nobanda will present a performance at the opening tonight, Monday 4 June from 6pm to 8pm.

The forest workshop has various objectives. Firstly, to invite the Kenyan public to “re-look” at the issue of deforestation and our loss of wilderness sites and to re-ignite our desire to keep these sites healthy and alive. Secondly, to challenge Kenyan artists to work in a completely different and new environment which may make them and the public question their ideas on art. Kuona trust is seeking applications from interested artists willing to take part in a two week workshop in the Ngong forest sanctuary in Nairobi from the 17^thSeptember to the 29^th of September 2007

Invitation to Apply for Triangle Residency Fellowship Programme in Vermont

The Vermont Studio Center (VSC) is pleased to announce the 3rd Annual VSC/Triangle Residency Fellowships Program for Artists from the Middle East and Africa, funded by the Ford Foundation and administered in conjunction with the Triangle New York network of workshops and residencies.

All Middle Eastern and African artists are welcome to apply for the three (3) available awards; however, artists who have previously won one of the Ford/Triangle/VSC awards are ineligible. Each Fellowship includes an 8-week Residency at the Vermont Studio Center in September and October of 2007, followed by a one-week cultural trip to New York City museums and galleries hosted by Triangle New York. For the Vermont residency component, each award includes individual studio space, housing, meals, a roundtrip travel stipend, traveler’s insurance, materials and shipping allowances, and a daily living stipend.

2007 PPC Young Concrete Sculptor Awards

South Africa's leading cement producer, PPC Cement, would like to invite all artists 'young' in the art of sculpting to participate in the 2007 PPC Young Concrete Sculptor Awards. The competition is open to sculptors who are 18 years and older, or who have no formal training and have recently become acquainted with concrete as a medium.

Prize money of R20 000 will be awarded to the winner of each of the two equally important categories: Best Sculptor on Exhibition; and Technical Excellence in Concrete Sculpture.

R7 500 will be awarded to the runners up in each category and a R2 500 merit award will be awarded in each category.

THE LOST MEN MOÇAMBIQUE – a memorial installation

The Lost Men Moçambique (TLM) - a poignant site specific, outdoor
memorial installation by artist Paul Emmanuel, will be installed in the
public space of the Catembe ferry jetty from the 24th April 2007.

It will be on this site for three weeks. This delicate and ephemeral work,
with images printed on transparent voile, dialogues with memory
around losses both private and collective,related to the various conflicts
leading towards Moçambican independence.

The Lost Men Project was launched to public and media acclaim
at the 2004 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, South Africa. This
is the only time this work was seen in South Africa.

Paul Emmanuel states, “This work is an expression of my personal
experience as someone who has knowledge of mourning and
memory.The delicate, fragile presence of the work situated in a
‘landscape’ which,in Maputo, is a liminal space of departure and
arrival, provides the viewer with a particular context to contemplate
the images, and their relationship with this specific site. In this
instance, the Catembe Jetty”.

Les Cohn of Art Source South Africa and TLM project manager says, “
This innovative project has taken three years of sensitive negotiation
and development to bring it to fruition. Art Source is proud to present
this exquisite work to the public of Maputo.”

An official opening event, together with a small exhibition of prints –
products from workshops to be conducted at the National School of
the Visual Arts, Maputo – will be held at the French Cultural Centre
