Residency Artists Presentation on Wednesday at 4:30pm

The Bag Factory invites you to an informal presentation by the current artists in residence at the Bag Factory.

Hans Wilschut (Netherlands), Ndikhumbule Ngquinambi (Cape Town) and Sita Moyo (Durban) will be offering brief presentations of their careers as artists and their current projects, after which they will be free to answer your questions in an informal session with coffee and muffins.

The presentations will commence at 4:30pm on Wednesday 20 August (tomorrow afternoon).

Call for Artists: TULIPAMWE 2008 PROJECT

ARTISTS ARE INVITED TO APPLY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE TULIPAMWE 2008 PROJECT WHICH WILL BE HELD FROM 16 – 30 AUGUST 2008 IN A RURAL VILLAGE IN NAMIBIA.

Call for Applications for the 2009 KHW Residency

The Künstlerhäuser Worpswede are one of the largest residencies in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Among former grant holders are many well-known international artists such as Emmett Williams, Koeken Ergun, Yuri Leiderman, Dan Perjovschi, Katharina Sieverding or Egill Saebjoernsson.

The Künstlerhäuser Worpswede are supported by the Barkenhoff Stiftung, Worpswede, and the private initiative Atelierhaus e. V., which collectively make the studios available. Besides the regular presentation of works produced in the studios both within and outside Worpswede, there are also, on a discursive level, artists' discussions, workshops and symposia on artists' support, which take place at the Barkenhoff.
The grant body is also supported by the state of Lower Saxony through the award of a monthly grant of 1.400 Euro.
A restriction concerning age or nationality does not exist.
Selection is made by a specialised jury in the fine arts and sound art respectively.

Applications for the 2009 residencies in the fields of fine arts and sound art for a duration of up to 6 months are requested as of now. The deadline is July 10th 2008 (date of postmark).

The Jan van Eyck Academie is an institute for research and production in the fields of fine art, design and theory. Every year, 48 international researchers realise their individual or collective projects in this artistic and critical environment. Artists, designers and theoreticians are invited to submit proposals for individual or collective research projects for a one-year, two-year or variable research period in the departments of Fine Art, Design and Theory. Deadline for submissions is 15 April 2008.

The Jan van Eyck researchers are part of a creative community. They are advised by a team of artists, designers and theoreticians who have won their spurs globally. They can also avail themselves of facilities that support their projects from first concept to public presentation. All in all, the Jan van Eyck offers artists, designers and theoreticians time and space to do research and realise productions, either about topics of their own choosing or as part of a project formulated by the institute itself.

The research undertaken at the Jan van Eyck is multidisciplinary. This results in a very heterogeneous programme. The cross-links that are established and the exchange between researchers of different cultural and intellectual backgrounds generate a creative and challenging working environment.

This event is a brief expose on the artists who participated on the Bag Factory's Inter-provincial project. The inter-provincial project invited 12 developing and mid-career artists from other parts of South Africa to Johannesburg. The project was based at the Bag Factory in Newtown, and gave participants the opportunity to experience the Johannesburg art scene and offered them the facilities to be creative together and enhance their art and their careers. The project consisted of informal talks/discussions by art personalities, drawing workshops, presentations by participants and Johannesburg artists, and an open creative workshop.

Bag Factory Residents Exhibition and Walkabout

The Bag Factory Residency Artist's Exhibition featuring Ricky Burnett, Chike Chinazom and Anannias Dago opened on the 17th of September and was followed by an artists' walkabout on Wednesday the 19th. Both events were well attended.

Residency Artist's Work Online: Beeldenstad.net

Beeldenstad.net, the brainchild of Babak Fakhamzadeh (Bag Factory Artist in Residence), was started as an informal way to track art in public spaces in several cities in Europe. Last year, Google Maps functionality was added to display public artworks on a map of some of those cities.

Beeldenstad.net is fully user driven, meaning that anyone can submit artworks and photos, the latter either directly through Beeldenstad.net, or alternatively through the popular photo sharing service Flickr.com.

During Babak's third month as a resident artist at The Bag Factory, he worked together with Eric Itzkin of the department of Arts, Culture and Heritage of the city of Johanesburg, to identify and map some 50 public artworks and bring them to Beeldenstad.net, most of them with extensive information on the individual artworks.

Now, Beeldenstad.net also offers KML and GeoRSS feeds for displaying geospatial information inside Google Earth or Google Maps.

23 May 2007: Residency Artists' Exhibition

Despite the bitter cold that gripped Johannesburg last week, the residency artists managed to pull a fair sized crowd for their exhibition that opened on 23 May 2007. The exhibition which features work by Stuart Whipps, Jasone Miranda Bilbao and Babak Fakhamzadeh closes this week Wednesday 30 May 2007.

The show runs until the 30 May and there will be a walkabout and presentation by the artists on Friday 25 May at 3:30pm.

Babak Fakhamzadeh is a Dutch/Iranian web guru and photographer who was instrumental in organising the PhotographySA.com/About Art photography marathon in Johannesburg in February.
