Call for Entries: Edward Ruiz Mentorship

The Market Photo Workshop, in association with AngloGold Ashanti, is proud to announce the third edition of the Edward Ruiz Mentorship.

The Edward Ruiz Mentorship awards an emerging photographer the opportunity to mentored by a leading photography professional, and produce a body of work for exhibition.

The Mentorship:
The mentorship is designed to create ‘momentum’ to launch a promising photographer’s career in photography.

  • Mentor appointed in consultation with Market Photo Workshop.
  • Work must be done within the borders of South Africa.
  • Exhibition must be premiered at the Market Photo Workshop gallery.
  • Photographer must be available to complete the project by the end of 2007.

To apply:

Applicants must provide:

  • A comprehensive CV, with full contact details
  • An existing portfolio, 12-20 photographs
  • 100-200 words on existing work to explain photography vision
  • Project Proposal (one page, 300 words)

All applications can be received electronically.

Project proposal should address the following areas:

  • The focus, meaning and intention of the project
  • Why do you think your project is important?
  • How do you envisage managing your project from start to finish (planning, permissions, photographing, printing, exhibition, etc)?

Selection of a candidate:

  • By a panel of judges appointed by the Advisory Board of the Market Photo Workshop.
  • Candidates may be requested to come for an interview and/or to clarify and present their proposal.
  • The judges need to be satisfied that the proposal from the candidate/s has merit; that the candidate will be able to manage the project and that he/she is likely to derive lasting benefits from the mentorship.

Scope of the grant:

The grant of R30,000 will enable the successful photographer to produce and exhibit a body of work and will assist with:

  • the purchase of necessary supplies and materials for production and exhibition
  • some travel
  • research

Timeframe:

  • Deadline for applications is 18 July 2007
  • Only successful applicants will be informed by email no later than 30 Jul 2006.
  • The candidate must begin work soon thereafter.

Exhibitions: Sam Nhlengethwa and Andrew Tshabangu

Andrew Tshabangu - City in Transition

Bag Factory artists Sam Nhlengethwa and Andrew Tshabangu both open exhibitions this month.

Nhlengethwa will exhibit solo work as well as collaborations in conjunction with Robert Hodgins at art on paper. The exhibition entitled Double Jeopardy will open this Saturday, 9 June 2007 at 13h00. The exhibition closes on 30 June 2007.

Tshabangu's exhibition, City in Transition, opens Thursday 14 June @18h30 at Gallery MOMO.
The exhibition closes 7 July 2007.

Athi-Patra Ruga @ Michael Stevenson

Bag Factory artist Athi-Patra Ruga opens his first gallery exhibition in the side gallery at Michael Stevenson in Cape Town this evening. The show entitled She's Dancing for the Rain with her Hand in the Toaster features an installation of suspended garments designed by Ruga, and will be complemented by Scenes from Miss Congo, a multi-channel video work shot on location in Kinshasa, DRC, during a recent residency (part of the final instalment of Die Naai Masjien Trilogy).

Ruga and his team, consisting of performance partner Christopher Martin, actress Simanga Humphrey and personal assistant/production designer Bianca Nobanda will present a performance at the opening tonight, Monday 4 June from 6pm to 8pm.
